The 70-Week Prophecy of Daniel 9:24–27
Israel's Last Warning and the Precise Timetable of the Messiah

"Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks." — Daniel 9:25 (KJV)

Daniel 9 records one of the most remarkable time prophecies in all of Scripture. While studying Jeremiah's prediction of seventy years of Babylonian captivity, Daniel poured out his heart in confession and intercession for his people. In response, the angel Gabriel came with a message that not only answered Daniel's concerns about Jerusalem — but set forth a detailed prophetic schedule reaching to the Messiah Himself.

This prophecy is not a vague spiritual impression. It is a precise, mathematically verifiable timetable that was fulfilled to the very year — and it connects directly to the great 2,300-day prophecy of Daniel 8:14 and the events of 1844.

The Prophecy — Daniel 9:24–27

"Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks… And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself… And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease…"

— Daniel 9:24–27 (KJV)

Key Principles from the Spirit of Prophecy

Ellen White explains that the word translated "determined" literally means "cut off." The seventy weeks — 490 prophetic days, or 490 literal years by the day-year principle of Numbers 14:34 and Ezekiel 4:6 — were cut off from the longer 2,300-day period of Daniel 8:14 and allotted especially to the Jewish people and their holy city.

Both periods begin together at the same starting point: the going forth of the commandment to restore and build Jerusalem. That full decree was issued by Artaxerxes in 457 B.C. and went into effect in the autumn of that year (see Ezra 7).

The Day-Year Principle

"After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities." — Numbers 14:34

"I have appointed thee each day for a year." — Ezekiel 4:6

In symbolic Bible prophecy, one prophetic day equals one literal year. This principle, consistently applied, unlocks the time prophecies of Daniel and Revelation.

A.D. 27 — The Anointing of the Messiah

At the close of the 69 weeks — 483 years from the autumn of 457 B.C. — we arrive at the autumn of A.D. 27. At that precise time, Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan River and anointed by the Holy Spirit descending upon Him as a dove. He then began His public ministry, preaching:

"The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel." — Mark 1:15

Jesus was not merely announcing a general spiritual truth. He was pointing directly to this very prophecy — the 69 weeks of Daniel 9. The time was fulfilled. The Messiah had come exactly on schedule.

A.D. 31 — Messiah Cut Off in the Midst of the Week

The final week of the 70 ran from A.D. 27 to A.D. 34. In the midst of this week — A.D. 31 — Messiah was "cut off, but not for Himself." On the cross of Calvary the true Sacrifice was offered, and the ceremonial sacrifices and oblations of the earthly sanctuary ceased in significance. The temple veil was torn from top to bottom, showing that the earthly system had met its antitype.

The Lamb of God had been slain. Every Passover lamb, every burnt offering, every Day of Atonement sacrifice — all had pointed forward to this moment. The shadow met the substance. The type met the antitype.

A.D. 34 — The Close of Israel's Probationary Period

The seventy weeks closed in A.D. 34. At that time the Jewish nation, through the official action of its leaders in the stoning of Stephen and the ensuing persecution of the disciples, sealed its rejection of the gospel. The apostles then turned to the Gentiles, and the special probationary period allotted to the Jewish nation as God's covenant people ended.

This was not a punishment but a fulfillment. God had granted Israel 490 years of special favor. He had sent His Son. He had confirmed the covenant. The nation's leaders had made their choice. The gospel now went to all the world.

Connection to the Longer Prophecy — The 2,300 Days and 1844

Because the 490 years were cut off from the 2,300 years of Daniel 8:14, the remaining 1,810 years extend from A.D. 34 to the autumn of 1844. At that time, according to the angel's words:

"Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed." — Daniel 8:14

The Spirit of Prophecy identifies this as the beginning of Christ's final phase of high-priestly ministry in the Most Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary — the investigative judgment. Just as the earthly Day of Atonement was a day of judgment and cleansing, the heavenly antitype began in 1844 as Christ entered the Most Holy Place to begin the final review of the cases of all who have ever lived.

The Two Prophecies — One Starting Point

457 B.C. — Decree of Artaxerxes (starting point for both prophecies)

+ 490 years = A.D. 34 — End of the 70 weeks / Israel's probation

+ 1,810 years = 1844 — End of the 2,300 years / Cleansing of the sanctuary

Both prophecies begin at the same decree. The 70 weeks is the key that unlocks the starting point of the 2,300 days.

Why This Prophecy Matters

This prophecy demonstrates the exactness of God's Word. Centuries in advance it fixed the time of the Messiah's appearance, His anointing, His sacrificial death, and the close of the special period granted to Israel. Its perfect fulfillment in the life, death, and aftermath of Jesus Christ stands as a powerful testimony that the same God who ordered these events will also fulfill every remaining promise concerning the cleansing of the sanctuary, the close of probation, and the soon return of our Lord.

The 70-week prophecy is not merely an ancient calculation. It is a solemn reminder that God grants periods of probation, that He keeps exact time, and that the decisions of nations and individuals regarding the Messiah have eternal consequences.

A Word from the Spirit of Prophecy

“The seventy weeks of Daniel 9 and the 2300 days of Daniel 8 begin at the same time and terminate at different dates. The seventy weeks were to be cut off from the 2300 days; they must therefore begin with the 2300 days. The seventy weeks began in 457 B.C., and 490 years therefrom reach to A.D. 34. From this point there remain of the 2300 years 1810 years, which bring us to 1844.”

— Ellen G. White, The Great Controversy

We are living in the time when the final movements of this great prophetic outline are unfolding. The investigative judgment is in progress. Probation is still open. The call of the Three Angels of Revelation 14 is going to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people.

"The Lord is not slack concerning His promise… but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." — 2 Peter 3:9

May we, living in the time when the final movements of this great prophetic outline are unfolding, give earnest heed to the light God has given through His Word and the Spirit of Prophecy.
