When God Raises Up Light, the Enemy Raises Counterfeits: The 19th Century Awakening and the True Remnant
In The Great Controversy, Ellen G. White writes: “Whenever the gospel has been preached with power, it has been met by the powers of darkness.” History confirms this pattern. Whenever God begins to restore precious truth, Satan works to confuse and divert.
“The people of God are directed to the Scriptures as their safeguard against the influence of false teachers and the delusive power of spirits of darkness. Satan employs every possible device to prevent men from obtaining a knowledge of the Bible; for its plain utterances reveal his deceptions. … So closely will the counterfeit resemble the true that it will be impossible to distinguish between them except by the Holy Scriptures. By their testimony every statement and every miracle must be tested.” Ellen G White ‘The Great Controversy’ Page 593
The 2300-day prophecy of Daniel 8:14 ended in 1844...
In the early 19th century, there was a huge revival in the United States. Farmers plowed and taught their children to read from the Bible. God raised up the Millerite movement to proclaim the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation. The 2300-day prophecy of Daniel 8:14, pointed to 1844. After the Great Disappointment on October 22, 1844, a small group continued studying. They discovered the heavenly sanctuary truth, the ongoing investigative judgment, and the importance of the seventh-day Sabbath. Shortly after the Disappointment, God gave young Ellen Harmon (later White) her first vision in December 1844. Through her, the Lord confirmed the light and guided the formation of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This movement proclaims the three angels’ messages of Revelation 14: 6-12 (the last message in the Bible) and calls people back to the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus (Revelation 14:12). Grok itself recognized this on the front page of this website:
“Me: Question to Grok: Does the SDA Church Fulfill a Role in Bible Prophecy?
‘Yes—in the historicist framework that the church itself embraces and that many early Protestant reformers also held.’”
Grok continues: This is not self-promotion. It is Bible prophecy identifying the remnant church of Revelation 12:17 — “the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” What is the ‘Testimony of Jesus’? ” The testimony of Jesus is ‘The Sprit of Prophecy’. Rev 19:10
The Counterfeits Appear at the Same Time
Right in this critical prophetic window, other powerful movements suddenly arose:
- Joseph Smith and Mormonism — Claiming new scripture (Book of Mormon), new priesthood authority, and a “restoration.” It introduced a different view of God (three separate beings), a different plan of salvation (faith + works + temple rites + potential godhood), and polygamy. It appeared just before and during the Millerite preaching.
- Karl Marx (Communist Manifesto, 1848) — Promoting godless materialism and class warfare.
- Charles Darwin (Origin of Species, 1859) — Elevating evolution and undermining the biblical account of Creation and the Sabbath as its memorial.
These were not random. As light broke forth on the sanctuary, the Sabbath, and the judgment-hour message, darkness offered attractive alternatives: a new “Christian” book, a political utopia without God, and a science that removed the Creator. Jesus warned us: “For there shall arise false christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect” (Matthew 24:24).Paul added: “Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness” (2 Corinthians 11:14–15).
Why Mormonism Cannot Be the Remnant. The remnant church has clear biblical marks:
- Keeps all of God’s Ten Commandments, including the seventh-day Sabbath of the 4th Commandment.
- Has the testimony of Jesus, which is the Spirit of Prophecy (Revelation 19:10).
- Proclaims the three angels’ messages, including the warning against the mark of the beast.
- Emerges after 1844 as the continuation of the Reformation.
Mormonism meets none of these. It teaches a different Sabbath emphasis, follows Joseph Smith as prophet instead of the biblical gift seen in Ellen White, adds scriptures that contradict the Bible on key doctrines, and does not proclaim the sanctuary or three angels’ messages. It is a sincere but counterfeit restoration appearing at the exact time God was raising the true remnant.
Two Movements at the End of the 2300 Days: One Remnant, One Counterfeit
The 2300-day prophecy of Daniel 8:14 ended in 1844. God was cleansing the heavenly sanctuary and raising up a people to proclaim the judgment-hour message. In that exact prophetic window, two new movements emerged — but only one can be the remnant church of Bible prophecy. There cannot be two truths.
The True Remnant Emerges After the Great Disappointment, a faithful group continued searching the Scriptures. They discovered the seventh-day Sabbath, the heavenly sanctuary, and the three angels’ messages. God confirmed this light through the prophetic gift given to Ellen G. White. The Seventh-day Adventist Church was born — a movement that keeps all the commandments of God (including the fourth) and has the testimony of Jesus, which is the Spirit of Prophecy (The voluminous writings of Ellen G White) Revelation 12:17; 19:10; 14:12).
The Counterfeit Appears
At the same time, Joseph Smith claimed to be a prophet and produced the Book of Mormon. From its very beginning, Mormon missionaries knocked on doors with the message: “You need a prophet.” Not “You need Jesus.” Not “You need the Bible.” But a new prophet, new scriptures, and a new restoration. This is a critical distinction. The true remnant points people to Jesus and to the full counsel of Scripture, including the unchanged law of God.
The Isaiah 8:20 Test
“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” (Isaiah 8:20)… Apply this test:
- The Sabbath — The fourth commandment is clear: the seventh day is the Sabbath. The remnant restored this truth. Mormonism never has. If the Mormon church were the remnant, it would have seen and taught the Sabbath truth. It did not.
- The State of the Dead — The Bible teaches the dead are asleep, unconscious until the resurrection. Mormonism teaches a different view that opens the door to spiritism and temple work for the dead.
- Prophecy — The remnant correctly identifies the little horn, the sea beast, the man of sin, and the mark of the beast (Sunday legislation enforced by civil power, when the beast “speaks as a dragon” — Revelation 13). Mormonism does not proclaim these messages.
- The 2300 Days and 70 Weeks — These timelines are central to understanding 1844 and the investigative judgment. Mormonism offers no parallel light.
Because Mormon teaching does not align with the law and the testimony on these points, Isaiah 8:20 declares there is no light in that system.
Daughters of the Harlot
Revelation 17 pictures Babylon the Great and her daughters — churches that retain elements of her false teachings while claiming to be reformed. By retaining Sunday, a different gospel, additional scriptures that contradict the Bible, and a different Godhead, the Mormon church fits the pattern of one of Babylon’s daughters — sincere people, but built on a different foundation. Jesus warned of false prophets who would appear in the last days (Matthew 24:24). Paul warned of “another Jesus” and “another gospel” (2 Corinthians 11:4). The timing is not coincidence. When God raised the remnant, the enemy raised a counterfeit.
Which Will You Choose?
- One movement calls you to a living prophet and new scriptures.
- The other calls you to Jesus, the commandments of God (including the seventh-day Sabbath), and the three angels’ messages for the final generation.
The Bible is clear: only one fulfills the remnant prophecy. The Seventh-day Adventist Church carries that message. Study for yourself. Compare every doctrine with “the law and the testimony.” The hour of God’s judgment has come (Revelation 14:7). Will you stand with the remnant who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus?
