The Great Supper Parable:
Matthew 22 & Luke 14

"Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb." — Revelation 19:9

Two parables in the Gospels — the Wedding Dinner of Matthew 22:1–14 and the Great Supper of Luke 14:15–24 — are often read as the same story. But a careful study reveals they are distinct invitations separated by time and audience, each carrying a profound prophetic message for God's people.

The first invitation was directed to Israel during Christ's earthly ministry. The second is the urgent end-time call — going out now to the churches and to the world — before the door of mercy closes forever.

Table 1: Side-by-Side Parable Comparison

AspectFirst Invitation: "Dinner" (Matthew 22:1–14) — The Earlier Call to the JewsSecond Invitation: "Supper" (Luke 14:15–24) — The Later End-Time Call to the Churches and Beyond
Meal Type & Timing"Dinner" – an earlier daytime/main meal invitation, representing the initial call during the Messiah's ministry to Israel as God's covenant people. This is the first major feast invitation."Supper" – an evening/later meal, symbolizing the urgent final call at the close of time when the day is far spent and the wedding is imminent.
Host & OccasionA great king making a marriage feast for his son; servants sent to announce that the dinner is prepared (oxen and fatlings killed, all things ready).A certain man making a great supper; servant sent at supper time to tell the bidden guests that all things are now ready.
Initial Guests InvitedThose originally bidden – the Jewish nation, who had long been prepared through the prophets and the Old Testament promises for the coming of the Messiah. Many who were bidden – the Christian churches and Protestant world in the end time, who have received the gospel light but are now being called to the final feast.
Response of the GuestsThey made light of the invitation, went their ways (one to his farm, another to his merchandise), and the rest mistreated and killed the king's servants. All with one consent began to make excuses (I have bought a farm… I have bought five yoke of oxen… I have married a wife). Worldly cares and priorities took precedence.
King's / Lord's ReactionThe king was angry, sent forth his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city (fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70). Jesus also declared in Matthew 23:38, "Behold, your house is left unto you desolate."The lord of the house was angry and declared that none of those men who were originally bidden would taste of his supper.
Extended InvitationServants commanded to go into the highways and byways and invite as many as they could find, both good and bad, so the wedding would be furnished with guests.Servant first sent to the streets and lanes of the city to bring in the poor, maimed, halt, and blind; then to the highways and hedges to compel people to come in so the house would be filled.
Requirement & Final WarningGuests must wear the proper wedding garment provided by the king (symbol of Christ's righteousness). One without it was cast out into outer darkness. Many called, but few chosen. The house must be filled. The original privileged guests are excluded. All who come must come on the master's terms.

Table 2: Timeline & Prophetic Application

Stage / EventFirst Invitation ("Dinner" – to the Jews) — Historical FulfillmentSecond Invitation ("Supper" – at the Close of Time) — End-Time ApplicationUltimate Hope & Fulfillment
Biblical / Historical PeriodTime of Christ's earthly ministry and the early church (first century A.D.), during the 70-week prophecy period. The present end-time era, especially the period of the Three Angels' Messages and the final proclamation of truth.Preparation for the literal Marriage Supper of the Lamb at Christ's return.
Probation / Special OpportunityDaniel 9's 70 weeks (490 years) gave Israel a specific window of national probation and privilege.Churches and the world today have been given advancing light and present truth; this is the final window before probation closes.God's last merciful call before the door of mercy shuts forever.
End of Special Corporate ProbationA.D. 34 – stoning of Stephen marked the close of the 70 weeks and the Jewish nation's final rejection of the gospel as a people. Many churches today repeat the pattern by clinging to creeds and traditions instead of embracing full Bible truth (Sabbath, etc.).Individual decisions still matter until the very end.
Rejection & Its ConsequencesPersistent rejection of prophets, John the Baptist, Jesus, and the apostles led to national judgment.Excuses, worldliness, and refusal of present truth by many in the churches. Those who reject the final call will be shut out of the supper.
Visible JudgmentA.D. 70 destruction of Jerusalem: "Your house is left unto you desolate"; not one stone left upon another (Matthew 24).Spiritual fall of Babylon and the "thief in the night" experience for unprepared churches and individuals.Final desolation for the unrepentant at the end of time.
Extension of the InvitationAfter rejection, the call went to the Gentiles and outsiders from the highways and byways.Call goes to the spiritually poor, maimed, blind, and those in the highways and hedges – gathering a remnant from every nation and background.God's inclusive mercy reaches the humble and sincere wherever they are.
Who Responds & Is Gathered? The "good and bad" who accept the king's invitation after the original guests refuse. The wounded by churches, the seeking, and the humble who respond to the final loud cry.A purified remnant prepared as the bride of Christ.
Wedding Garment / ReadinessMust wear the garment provided by the king – Christ's perfect righteousness.Same requirement: clothed in the fine linen of the saints' righteous acts through faith in Jesus.Only those with the garment will remain at the feast.
Core of the Remnant's CharacterObedience to God's law and heeding the prophets in their time.Keeping the commandments of God and the testimony/faith of Jesus (Revelation 14:12).Full surrender and preparation for the King of kings.
Blessed AssuranceEven after rejection, God still sent the invitation to others. The supper house will be filled with those who accept the call."Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb" (Revelation 19:9).
"Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb." — Revelation 19:9

The invitation is still open. The servant is still going out into the highways and hedges. The question is: will you accept the call, put on the wedding garment of Christ's righteousness, and keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus?

"Come; for all things are now ready." — Luke 14:17

A Message from the Spirit of Prophecy

“By the wedding garment in the parable is represented the pure, spotless character which Christ’s true followers will possess. To the church it is given ‘that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white,’ ‘not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing.’ The fine linen, says the Scripture, ‘is the righteousness of saints.’ It is the righteousness of Christ, His own unblemished character, that through faith is imparted to all who receive Him as their personal Saviour.”

— Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 310

“The wedding garment represents the character which all must possess who shall be accounted fit guests for the wedding… Only the covering which Christ Himself has provided can make us meet to appear in God’s presence. This covering, the robe of His own righteousness, Christ will put upon every repenting, believing soul.”

— Christ’s Object Lessons, pp. 307, 311
